3rd Grade Handmade Brooms

Updated: Apr 22

This summer, as the sun was shining bright, warm rays onto our organic garden, the broom corn planted by the 3rd Grade class was growing. Later, as the leaves began to change color and the cold winds swept over our campus in early fall, the 3rd Grade harvested the corn and saved the stalks for a special project: brooms.

On November 20, the 3rd Grade class welcomed a special visitor to their class to teach them how to turn their harvested broom corn into brooms they could use at home. Dr. Sam Moyer is a broom making expert who has visited WSP each fall for many years to share his knowledge and talent with our community. With the help of Gardening Teacher Valerie Leone, 3rd Grade Teacher Ms. Eggers, and several parent volunteers, each of our 3rd Graders followed Dr. Moyers's instructions, and made a beautiful broom!

Gardening is one of the many special subjects that make up our rich, interdisciplinary Grade School curriculum.
