First and foremost, the teacher must love children and be able to direct them well. While only a portion of the position (8 lessons/week during the school year) is devoted to teaching students, the purpose of the gardening program in the school community is to inspire respect for the interrelationships of nature and to build will forces by having students actively engaged in the work and care of the garden and property.
In addition to work with the students, the gardening teacher also leads the care and maintenance of the common areas of the property and the garden. While some work is done by the gardening teacher, other work is done by assistants, students, staff, and volunteers. The gardening teacher must orient, train and supervise gardening assistants and volunteers. The maintenance work is about 5 hours/week during the school year and 20 hours week during the summer months. Assistant are available for about half of that time to support the maintenance efforts.
As a pioneering garden in a central New Jersey school, our school serves as a role model to other area school programs.
