history & philosophy

The Waldorf School of Princeton is part of an international educational movement that grew out of the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, scientist, architect, and artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1919 the owner of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in Stuttgart, Germany asked Steiner to found a school for his workers’ children. With an emphasis on child development and a balanced curriculum incorporating practical, intellectual, and artistic elements, the movement has now grown to over 800 schools on five continents.

After several years of preparation, our school began with a nursery-kindergarten in 1983. September, 1985 marked the inauguration of the grade school—a first grade class in a room rented from a local church. In 1989 the school moved to its present location at the Golden House on Cherry Hill Road, north of Princeton.

At present all eight grades are located on our main campus, together with one kindergarten and the parent-child program. Three nursery-kindergarten classes are housed off-campus in church buildings in Princeton and the nearby village of Hopewell. We are currently creating a master plan that will allow us to consolidate all our classes on the Cherry Hill Road campus.
